Techniques for measuring atmospheric aerosols at the High Resolution Fly’s Eye experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
We describe several techniques developed by the High Resolution Fly’s Eye experiment for measuring aerosol vertical optical depth, aerosol horizontal attenuation Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 5 February 2008 length, and aerosol phase function. The techniques are based on measurements of side-scattered light generated by a steerable ultraviolet laser and collected by an optical detector designed to measure fluorescence light from cosmic-ray air showers. We also present a technique to cross-check the aerosol optical depth measurement using air showers observed in stereo. These methods can be used by future air fluorescence experiments.

Point sources in the atmosphere are surrounded by aureole because of atmospheric scattering. The properties of the time-dependent aureole radiance are calculated by use of a Monte Carlo approach and an iterative method. Since the aureole is particularly important in the ultraviolet, which is the region the Ultra-High-Energy (UHE) cosmic ray experiment using the air fluorescence technique like F...
متن کاملSky Maps of High Resolution Fly’s Eye Stereo Data Above 10 eV
Presented are a number of techniques to search for anisotropies in High Resolution Fly’s Eye stereo data collected to date. The method employed to search for point sources is that of shower density sky maps. An integrated version is used to search for larger anisotropies. Finally, large-scale anisotropies are investigated using a harmonic analysis designed to account for HiRes uneven exposure t...
متن کاملImproving Super-resolution Techniques via Employing Blurriness Information of the Image
Super-resolution (SR) is a technique that produces a high resolution (HR) image via employing a number of low resolution (LR) images from the same scene. One of the degradations that attenuates performance of the SR is the blurriness of the input LR images. In many previous works in the SR, the blurriness of the LR images is assumed to be due to the integral effect of the image sensor of the im...
متن کاملThe Search for Anisotropy in the Arrival Directions of Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays Observed by the High Resolution Fly’s Eye Detector in Monocular Mode
The High Resolution Fly’s Eye HiRes-I detector has now been in operation in monocular mode for over six years. During that time span, HiRes-I has accumulated a larger exposure to Ultra-High Energy Cosmic Rays (UHECRs) above 10 eV than any other experiment built to date. This presents an unprecedented opportunity to search for anisotropy in the arrival directions of UHECRs. We present results of...
متن کاملObservation of the Ankle and Evidence for a High-EnergyBreak in the Cosmic Ray Spectrum
Preprint submitted to Elsevier Science 17 December 2004 We have measured the cosmic ray spectrum at energies above 1017 eV using the two air fluorescence detectors of the High Resolution Fly’s Eye experiment operating in monocular mode. We describe the detector, PMT and atmospheric calibrations, and the analysis techniques for the two detectors. We fit the spectrum to models describing galactic...
